We are a volunteer-led organization dedicated to expanding children's (0 to 18 years old) ownership of high-quality books through direct distribution and impact. We do that by distributing bundles of books to schools, institutions, and organizations in the DC metro area. We believe that all children should have access to free, high-quality books regardless of household income. We bundle books together by age, interest, and themes.
Having books in the home can be as impactful as having college educated parents. A two-decade long academic study showed that a child's education can be propelled 3.2 years further if they have parents who attended college or a book collection of 500 books. The research also shows that having as few as 20 books at home can make a difference in a child's academic success, vocabulary development, attention, and job attainment.
The number of books at home matters. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) has found that there is a relationship between children's access to home literacy materials and their academic and reading achievement. The research shows that the number of books in the home significantly correlates to higher reading scores for children. Children who reported having more types of literacy materials in their homes also had higher average reading proficiency.
Reading impacts children's social, emotional, and academic growth. Research shows that reading enables personal, social, and economic development. Children who are engaged readers have increased learning opportunities, increased empathy, more active imaginations, and perform better in school. We want to make an impact, one bundle of books at a time, on children and their future.
